Every Journey Has Checkpoints: An Airport Reflection on the Ākhirah

A simple wait at an airport became a powerful reminder of the journey every soul is destined to take. From check-in to boarding, every traveler passes through appointed stages that cannot be skipped—much like the stages Allah has decreed for mankind. This reflection draws lessons from the airport experience through the lens of the Qur'an and Sunnah, reminding us that our final destination depends not on who we are, but on what we bring before Allah.

There is something deeply reflective about waiting at an airport.

Everywhere you look, people are in motion. Some are struggling to push heavy luggage. Others are frantically searching through their bags for passports, visas, or boarding passes. Some are anxiously watching the departure screens, hoping they haven't missed an announcement. Families hurry from one checkpoint to another. Long queues form, only to move a few steps at a time. Some travelers appear calm and prepared, while others are clearly overwhelmed.

Yet, despite their different backgrounds, destinations, and circumstances, they all share one thing in common: they are on a journey.

Thousands of people gather with a single goal—to reach their destination. Yet, no matter how important or influential someone may be, everyone must go through the required process.

First comes the check-in.

Then security.

Then immigration.

Then the boarding gate.

لَتَرْكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٍ

"You will surely pass from one stage to another." (Qur'an 84:19)

As I sat waiting at the airport, this verse kept coming to mind.

Just as every traveler must pass through each checkpoint in sequence, Allah has decreed a journey for every human being. No one can skip the stages. No one can bypass the process.

From this life to death.

From death to the Barzakh.

From resurrection to the Gathering.

From the Gathering to accountability.

Then, by Allah's mercy and justice, to one's eternal destination.

Allah says:

"O mankind! Indeed, you are laboring toward your Lord with great exertion, and you will meet Him." (Qur'an 84:6)

No one at the airport can simply decide to walk straight to the aircraft. Every passport is examined. Every boarding pass is checked. Every document is scrutinized.

Those whose documents are in order are allowed to proceed. Those whose documents are not may be delayed, detained, or prevented from continuing their journey.

It made me think of the Day when each of us will stand before Allah. On that Day, none of us will move forward except by His permission. Our worldly status, wealth, and influence will be of no benefit. What will matter is the record we bring before Him.

Allah says:

"And every one of them will come to Him on the Day of Resurrection alone." (Qur'an 19:95)

Then I noticed something else.

Pilots and cabin crew walked through dedicated lanes with remarkable ease while everyone else patiently waited in long queues. They still passed through the necessary procedures, but their journey through them was far easier.

It reminded me of the glad tidings of the Prophet ﷺ that seventy thousand of his Ummah will enter Paradise without reckoning and without punishment. By Allah's immense mercy, they will be admitted without undergoing the reckoning that others will face.

The airport itself is only a temporary stop before a journey that may last a few hours.

This world is only a temporary stop before a journey that lasts forever.

The question is not whether we will travel.

The question is whether our "documents"—our īmān, sincerity, repentance, and righteous deeds—will be accepted when we stand before the One from whom nothing is hidden.

May Allah make us among those whose records are given in their right hands, whose reckoning is made easy, and who enter Jannatul Firdaus without punishment and without reckoning, solely by His infinite mercy.

Āmīn.
